Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I had computer issues and had to have them resolved. Anyway, I first learned by looking up the healing properties of crystals online. There's a wonderful site that explains the properties and more about what does what at peacefulmind.com (of course use the standard http://www first then /stones.htm I am not putting the link down because I don't think this site will let you, but there's a whole lot of information on there. Then what I did was looked up on other sites how to use them (cleansing them - removing negative energies -by running under warm water for awhile, then putting them in the sun to charge). After that, I just tried different ones to see what worked and how much by trying them on my family, etc. My oldest daughter seems to be very responsive to them. It's sort of like when a doctor prescribes a medicine for someone and it works great for some people and not as well for others. Crystals are the same way, depending on the person and their receptiveness of the stone's energies. Good luck and I know once you find what works, you'll love it.
